Spoke with BBC Look North today about immigration. Mentioned the 330,000 person shortfall in the UK’s workforce, the loss of 58,000 nurses and 4,000 doctors following Brexit. Also outlined a process for reducing dependence on foreign workers by i. upskilling the local workforce, ii. mobilising it (e.g. higher wages and better work conditions for social carers, whom currently account for a quarter of visas issued) and iii. then taking a view on the gaps that need to be filled by migrant workers, informed by a national industrial strategy, local communities and businesses.
