Amazing result for Bradford. Congratulations to Naz Shah on winning another parliamentary term to represent Bradford West. Congratulations also to Cllr Muhammed Ali Islam on running as an Independent and coming very close to overturning an enormous majority. It shows the power of committed grassroots campaigning, and it’s so good to see someone young and from the community galvanise the electorate. It also shows that while Bradford is happy with Naz Shah’s voting record, it is dissatisfied with the Labour leadership on Palestine, and this will hopefully be a message that they hear.
For me, it was a great honour to stand as the Lib Dem candidate for Bradford West. I wanted our youth to know that a mainstream political party stands for international law and human rights, and I’ll continue to campaign alongside the Bradford Liberal Democrats into the future to deliver for residents in Bradford West inside the Liberal Democrats and out in the community.
Although the campaign was short – just 6 weeks! – I enjoyed meeting people on the doorsteps throuhgout the constituency. The conversations with and emails from residents showed that people in Bradford demand more from their representatives. I share that ambition for Bradford, and it is fantastic to have forged some friendships during the campaign.
I want to thank the people who supported me and the dedication of local members who campaigned with me in Bradford West. I am grateful to those who voted Liberal Democrat this time. Special thanks to Anthea, Terri, Mark, Rachel and Christianah, Liberal Democrat Councillors Jeanette, Alun, Riaz and Aislin and my agent Brendan who all went above and beyond. And of course, a great big thanks to my family, Maaria (and Zaydan) for supporting my decision to run, and for supporting me throughout.
